May 1 Forest Day

The damp weather did not dampen our spirits as we investigated the forest. We noticed the rain drops on the leaves and one child said, "It looks like glitter."

We also got dirty!

We noticed the plants are growing taller and the leaves are opening wide. We spent time looking at plants so we would know which ones we needed to stay away from. We pointed out nettles, poison ivy, and burning weed. The children were very good about asking if it was a safe plant before touching anything. We feel it is important for them to beware of and learn how to identify plants in the forest so they can stay safe there, at the park, on the playground, in their backyards, and other areas they may travel in the future.

Today the picnic table finally met its match. It wasn't long before the planks were used to build towers, an airplane, and a bridge over a deep hole the children dug. Sometimes it was a house and sometimes the billy goats gruff were crossing over.

Some children examined discoveries up close or compared heights of objects with people.

Many friends played together making up their own stories.

Some children discovered the water and dirt made "paint" they could decorate with.

The tree that we have watched decay all year is still standing. The children used thin flexible sticks to poke into the holes to see where they would come out.

One standard addressed today was:
Social Competence
C.EL. 3 Demonstrates understanding of rules and social expectations.
