March 5 Forest Day

Windy day, but we were sheltered down in our forest classroom. On our way down both groups saw the dried and frozen "river path" carved in the sand from last week's melting ice and snow. We noticed the treetops waving in the wind, saw pine cones fall, and even had a twig fall down near one of the children.

After reading our story, we worked on a cooking project today. We measured flour, added cinnamon sugar if we wanted, and last added water. We mixed it all up in a zip closure bag and set them near the fire for about an hour. We took the dough out and wrapped it on thick sticks to roast it over the fire. In the morning the fire was just getting a good start so it took longer, but by afternoon there was a good coal base and it browned up the bread better.

There was lots of digging and planting. One spot is marked so we can see if the pine cone planted there still had any seeds in it. We are hopeful a tree will grow.

Our imaginations were busy today as we looked for treasure, played music, roasted leaf marshmallows, pretended to sleep and waited for Santa, and were wild koalas, cats, and horses.

We also kept busy moving our bodies while hanging upside down, pushing logs, balancing, and running around.

In the morning one child discovered a tiny plant just starting to grow. Maybe spring really is on its way!

One standard addressed today was:
Motor Development
B.EL.1b Moves with strength, control, balance, coordination, locomotion, and endurance. Balance and Strength
