Forest Day Feb 12

We were greeted by lots of snow in the forest today! All the white powder was like magic fairy dust. The children were exploring, experimenting, creating, and just plain having fun. It was an awesome day to be out there even if it was on the colder side. Everyone was dressed in layers, there was no wind, and our minds & bodies stayed busy so we kept warm. We did shorten our time out there too to have a short time in our classroom reading our story and having our snack, which meant we had extra practice getting our layers on today.

The AM class helped dig the snow away from the port-a-potty so we could open the door.

Here are some ways we learned through play today:

 Cleaning snow off log
Hitting the tree with a stick to hear sounds--different depending on where hit the tree
Using shovels to fill the tins
Full tin ready to tip it over to try and make a "snow" castle
Cleaning off snow in a deliberate pattern
Pulling a tree back--reminded peers to stay away so they didn't get hit
Cleaning off logs just because the snow is there
A couple children watch as another loosens a log to move it--they ask questions about his plans
Rolling the log and making a path
 Riding on the tree
Discussing who would be Anna and who would be Elsa
Hunting trio looking for something to catch
Laying in the snow waiting for others to come find her--part of playing Ninja turtles
Building a house that later became the site of a bowling birthday party
 Planting a tree
 Sculpture created by a student
Setting the table and decorating for the party
Behind the sculture is the birthday cake with candles
Feeding the baby snow baby food
 Shredder got the Ninja Turtles
Two drummers played a rhythm on the table, but that vibrated the snow dishes off so there was discussion on what to do
 Ninja Turtles making a plan
 Snow is tasty
 Yum---snow!
 More party preparations
Trying to slide on a slight slope on bottoms and knees
Eating snow with no hands--they were animals getting their food
 Eating snow
More eating
 Making a pile
 Mixing and cooking

Throwing snow up to watch it fall
More throwing it up to watch it fall
 Balancing on the big log
Mixing food and using the stick to make a hole in a pile of snow
 Climbing a tree
The wolf (not a werewolf) is on the move
 Licking a chunk of snow
 Eating snow
Running and dancing through the space while singing her own song
 More snow tasting
Also singing her own song while walking around
Still eating snow while another uses the rock as her stage to finish her song
Exiting the stage with a leap
Crushing snow chunks to watch them fall apart
More snow for snack--"It tastes like ice" and "It tastes like water" I was told
The wolf crawling up to see what another child is doing
 Building a house
Making cakes in the tins--one was strawberry shortcake with sprinkles and the other one was lemon--both were served to me on a stick fork
Making a yellow and vanilla chocolate cake with frosting
Rolling a log over for the house
 Discussing what to do next
Running off being chased by the wolf
Getting the log in the right spot
 More cakes
Finding sticks buried in the snow
 Everyone busy and engaged
 Walking the log balance beam
Fourth graders joined us too--most were up by Miss Nogee but one big sister came down to hang out with younger sister and cousin--Now she gets to eat cake--They sang Happy Birthday too
Getting more supplies for the house
 Back to climbing the tree
After cleaning the snow off the log she walked across it
 Another special cake
The wolf is on the prowl again
 Work continues on the house
One got a branch for the other so they can clean the forest together
 Brushing and cleaning
More mixing fun with 4th grade big sister
First throwing and rubbing snow on the tree to make a design (cleaners came along and brushed some off)
Then used a stick to remove bark to make a design
The wolf still on the prowl
 Teeter totter
 The house
Changed the log placement underneath to make it a smoother ride
Another friend on the teeter totter
 In her house
Using a shovel to fill the pail with a cake for a birthday cake for a surprise party for McKenzie--"Can you tell all of them Mrs. Bender, but don't tell McKenzie, okay?"
More digging to fill another tin
Many friends on the teeter totter

One standard addressed was:
Curiosity, Engagement, and Persistence
A.EL. 3 Exhibits persistence and flexibility.
(Examples--walking up the snowy hill took persistence and flexibility as we changed our routine today)
