Our first day in the forest went great--maybe a few too many mosquitoes, but otherwise AMAZING! Heading down the trail in the morning we found many deer tracks; in the afternoon there were still a few that didn't get stepped on.
For some children it was their first time riding on a school bus.
We read a story called Green and then noticed many different shades of green in the forest.
We learned where our classroom boundaries were. We practiced finding the bright ribbons on the trees.
Finally it was time to explore and play. Our bodies were busy running, balancing, digging, jumping, climbing, pushing, lifting, building, and more. The afternoon class loved that they could yell and scream at the top of their lungs--outside is a great place to be loud.
We found sticks (some piled them together to create a campfire), pine cones, mushrooms, caterpillars, and frogs.
Here is what each child had to say when asked what was their favorite part of the day.
Blake--"I played with a piece of wood"
Josie--"Playing with sticks for the campfire"
Rodrik--"I was trying to climb but I got nothing"
Xane--"Forest"
Cooper--"Building"
Kaylynn--"Screaming on the table"
Skylar--"Jumping off that rock"
Joe--"I never played in such a place" and "Playing cops and robbers"
Jamie--"Probably just stealed sticks cause that's what robbers do"
Bronson--"Holding toads"
Jeffery--"Watch a fire things"
Lincoln--"Watching a fire and put sticks in the fire"
Journey--"Playing and making a fire for pretend"
Scarlett--"I had fun getting a fire with sticks"
Adalin--"Picking sticks and putting them in the fire"
We are all thinking about what we will do next week :)
One Standard addressed today was: Approaches to Learning: Curiosity, Engagement, and Persistence--A.EL. 1 Displays curiosity, risk-taking, and willingness to engage in new experiences.
