Oct 2 Forest Day

Warm but much cooler than last week for our forest time today. We read a story called Balancing Act. It reminded us of the the balancing and building we did last week.

Here are some highlights of what we did today:

  Found a bone

 Making a store

 Exploring together what happens when you crush pine cones with a rock

 Working together to try to take down a decaying tree

 Building a bridge

 Finding and carrying more supplies for the bridge

 Talking about how we each want to use the bridge

 Jumping over boards and logs on the bridge

 Cutting steaks and cleaning the grill

 Digging out the base of the decaying tree

 Digging for gold

 More digging

 Breaking a bone and looking inside

 Trying to break a stick by jumping on it

 Tyring to break a stick using rocks

 Gathering leaves to be the peanut butter in the sandwich

 Finding the other part of the broken bone

 Finding a chunk of the root--but no gold yet

 Feeding peanut butter and jelly sandwiches and Popsicles to everyone

 Holding a woolly bear caterpillar

 Finding another caterpillar--species unknown

 Woolly Bear caterpillar--he got passed around and did get a little stepped on but was seen crawling a few minutes later

 Watching unknown caterpillar crawl from leaf to stem of the plant

 Cleaning the big chunk of wood with a small stick

 Team work to move a board

 Two big sticks to put around the nest so the dinosaurs stay away

 A little steering and a push to keep the log rolling down the hill

 Almost to our classroom with the logs they rolled down the big hill

Balancing on logs while waiting for kindergartners to come up the hill before getting on the bus

Next week--I am wondering if the unknown caterpillar may have made a cocoon/chrysalis--can't wait to check it out.
